【Course】The First Global Online Seminar (1) - How to Read the Bible Lecture 1 - Imitating Jesus - Q&A

2019-04-12 4,933 First Workshop - How to Read the Bible Grace Trinity The Letter

Q1: In 1 Corinthians 12:9, it says, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit. This verse seems to support the idea that healing is a gift, and it also seems to suggest that not everyone has this gift of healing. How should this be interpreted?

Before answering this question, let me state upfront that what I say may not be entirely correct. I have never believed that everything I say is correct. However, the Bible should be correct. I cannot speak for other things, but in the New Testament, the writings of the Apostle John, the Apostle Paul, and the four Gospels should be quite accurate and consistent. With that, I will answer the question. If my answer is inappropriate or offends anyone, please bear with me.

This question is a crucial one that traditional churches often like to raise. I would argue that when the Apostle Paul wrote this letter, it was many years after Jesus was crucified and resurrected. What came many years later cannot negate Jesus' teachings from many years before.

First and foremost, brothers and sisters must understand Jesus Christ's definition of the church. Jesus' definition of the church cannot be replaced by Paul's later teachings. Jesus trained the first batch of disciples and the second batch of disciples, setting a good example for us. Therefore, I believe that no matter how Paul's explanations are interpreted, they cannot deny what Jesus Christ did previously.

If what Jesus Christ did is the model we imitate and follow, then we should first imitate Jesus Christ. When Jesus Christ was on earth, He spent a significant portion of His time healing the sick and casting out demons, and another significant portion preaching the truth. I think these should be the two things that a Christian should emulate most.

Now, let's return to this issue of gifts. What is a gift? What is Paul talking about here? These are offices; gifts are offices. If a person has a particular gift, he should serve well in that area. Let us consider, for example, a mathematics teacher whose gift is teaching mathematics, not teaching Mandarin. Would he speak Mandarin? Although he is not a language teacher, he can still speak Mandarin.

So what is a gift? Some people have a special talent. It is a special grace given to them by God. However, we cannot deny that we also have other abilities. We cannot stop speaking Mandarin just because we are not Mandarin teachers. A Mandarin teacher teaches others how to learn Mandarin because he has a gift in that area, but that does not mean that those who are not Mandarin teachers cannot speak Mandarin at all.

So some people have this particular gift; it is their office. They respect the office they have received. Does he have other abilities outside of this office? In reality, everyone should have them. This is the precedent set by Jesus Christ, and it cannot be replaced by Paul's later teachings. Paul is talking about a matter of office.

Q2: How should the concept of the Trinity be understood?

When people come to believe, many like to talk about the Triune God, but is the Trinity three heads on one body, or three bodies with one head? To this day, I still cannot figure it out. You might ask, since I have tried so hard to understand it, why haven't I been able to?

I'll tell you why. It's because there is one thing that I find most strange. From the beginning to the end of the Bible, I have never found the words Trinity! But what have I found? I have found God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. If you say that this is the Trinity, then fine, you can call it the Trinity, but I don't call it that. I call it God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Because is it three heads on one body, or three bodies with one head? The Bible does not say, and I don't want to know, because mysteries belong to God, and obvious things belong to us humans. We have not yet been able to keep and follow what God has revealed to us, so what's the point of studying this stuff idly?

There was a well-known pastor who wrote a book called The Trinity. Back then, he was a famous pastor, and I was just a small potato, or like Sanmao in Sanmao the Vagabond. Finally, I wandered into a church, and I used half a month's salary to buy his entire set of books, many volumes of which I read one by one. But no matter how I read, I could not understand what this Triune God was all about. After reading it once and not understanding, I read it again and still did not understand! I thought to myself, I am a smart guy, how can I not understand this?

Later, I slowly understood that he did not write it clearly, so how could I understand it? Later, I discovered that many people did not explain it clearly and could not explain it clearly. Is this a very important matter? I will tell you that if it were a very important matter, Jesus Christ would have told us! But you will find that He did not! Even if Jesus forgot, it would be one thing, but even in the time of the Apostle Paul, the Apostle Paul did not write about this matter. You cannot find it in the Bible.

Today, many people say that God created man, so who created God? This is not a question we can answer, and I don't want to answer it. This is not our theological system. So what is our theological system? It is that we read God's Word and put it into practice well.

Remember, God's requirements for us are not complicated. It is in your heart and in your mouth. We believe in our hearts, confess with our mouths, and then put it into practice in our lives. You will find that the name of Jesus Christ is far above all names on earth. Every time we pray, don't we pray in the name of Jesus Christ? Because Jesus Christ came into this world, became flesh, died for us, and rose from the dead for us. After ascending to heaven, He bestowed the Holy Spirit that He promised. It's just that simple. Don't complicate simple things! Complicating simple things confuses people and is of no benefit!

Q3: The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. How should we understand this?

This is a good question. Brothers and sisters must understand that our God is the God of the living, not the God of the dead. If we follow the letter, we will walk on the road to death! We must grasp the heart of God! Many people like to follow the letter, reading word by word, asking what it means according to the Hebrew translation, what it means according to the Greek translation! What it means according to the English translation! And so on.

In fact, no matter what language it is, as long as you grasp the heart of God after reading it, it is not difficult at all. Even if there are some discrepancies in some words, its overall meaning will not be wrong. You will find that I have a characteristic in leading Bible studies: I study chapter by chapter, not word by word.

Some people ask, what exactly is the Spirit? The Spirit is the heart of God, and the heart of God is called the Spirit. The Spirit is the essence. I tell you, the essence of the New Testament is to build up the body of Jesus Christ, and the body of Jesus Christ is the church. Therefore, building a holy, glorious, and victorious church is the glorious Mingding Destiny of our lives. What a pity if we cannot build a glorious church.
