【Bible Study】Deuteronomy 13 - Cutting Off Those Who Entice People to Forsake God

2017-09-23 36,000 Deuteronomy Eros Family Holding Fast to God Shepherding God's Flock

God is very serious and stern about people being enticed away from Him. God will put to death those who entice people away from Him, including those close to you, and you must not harbor them.

The situation we face today is that in a Christian's life, you will encounter many people who entice you away from God, including your family. It is difficult for us to implement putting them to death, as it does not align with the circumstances in which we live. However, our God displays a resolute attitude. We must take a firm stance against those who entice us away from God, which is to sever ties completely.

Enticing people away from God is very common in this world. What exactly is happening behind this? It is because the Lord your God is testing you to see if you love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength. A single test can reveal this. And many among us still do not know how to love the Lord our God with all their heart, soul, and strength. When we resolve the issue of loving the Lord our God, other temptations become insignificant.

If You Love God, You Will Not Feel Tired

Loving the Lord your God solves all confusion and problems. Investigation, discernment, and contemplation cannot solve the problems of enticement and temptation. Our God knows what we love in our hearts. One thing we need to understand today is that the root issue of solving the problems of heresy and cults is to love the Lord our God with all your heart, soul, and strength. If you have love for God in your heart, you will hardly be enticed.

Some time ago, I met an acquaintance, a pastor, on a plane. He sat next to me and told me that he was no longer a pastor. I also learned that another pastor had also stopped and both had chosen to go into business. He added, We have finally卸下了这个苦差[unburdened ourselves from this arduous task]. If you have this concept of a bitter chore, you do not have love for God in your heart, but rather love for this world. If your service is because of love for God, even if you rise before dawn and work late into the night, you will not feel tired because it is what you love.

Recently, I heard a leader share a sister's experience, working for 24 hours without feeling tired, but her service was sporadic. She forgot God as soon as she made some money. This sister considers service not as a joyful task. She has already touched a treasure, but does not know it is a treasure, clinging tightly to what is not a treasure, yet thinking she is holding onto a treasure.

If You Love God, Hold Tight to God

We must hold tight to God. If a person abandons God, not only will they live a meaningless life, but they will also live under future judgment. I have encountered many people who do not love God. These people serve God on the surface, but they do not love God in their hearts. They love houses and cars more. One brother loved cars very much. He bought a Mercedes-Benz and drove it around, colliding with a bus in an accident.

I also attended his funeral. There was a glass panel on the coffin through which you could see the deceased's face, a horrific sight like the scene of the car accident, the face stitched up with needles. This person was only in his 30s and loved cars especially. I stood by his coffin, feeling very emotional. I said to God, Let me love you well all my life. I will no longer love anything else. I will love God alone, and serving God is my greatest enjoyment.

There was another person who was a pastor in the church and loved cars very much. One day, he crashed into the back of a sprinkler truck and went under the truck, resulting in the destruction of the car and the death of the person. I also attended his funeral. In my heart, I said to God, Let me love you well, and do not let me deviate from you. I thank God that He has been very gracious to me. He has never let me lack anything, making me a wealthy person, leading me through one difficulty after another with a heart that loves God.

Because I love God, I have suffered a lot in the process of establishing a church, often weeping before God, but never giving up. I do not consider serving God to be a bitter chore. On the contrary, I believe that if you love God, all problems are solved. What problems can entice us away from God? Is it a person performing a miracle? Or a person having a dream? Can these cause us to deviate from God? The first thing that entices people to deviate from God is to make you no longer love God in your heart, thinking that serving God is a bitter chore. These things are a wondrous lie.

Let me give you a few examples. There is an activity called Family First. I am very puzzled because I cannot find this concept of Family First anywhere in the Bible. If for the sake of God and His Kingdom, we forsake our own families, what then? This is what the Bible teaches us: And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. (Matthew 19:29)

But today's moral concepts do not allow us to accept such a situation. A rationale that sounds very reasonable is not the word of God. Matters that sound very reasonable cannot deviate us from the path away from God. If you love God, you will be able to discern which things are idolatry and which is the true God. Why do many people perform miracles, preach the gospel, and cast out demons, yet Jesus says, I do not know you? It is not because they cast out demons or performed miracles, but because they do not love God. Loving God is the key to testing whether we believe in the Lord or not.

Some people do very well in their business. They quickly forget that it is God who gives them grace and blessings, but it is too difficult for them to love God because they are filled with the benefits of this life. If a person loves God, they can let go of anything. If you ask me why I have not missed a Sunday service in over twenty years, it is because I reject everything that entices me away from God. Nothing can entice me away from the Lord my God because He is my life, He is my greatest love. Many people may think I am crazy, but the Bible does say:

That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; that prophet or dreamer tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you. If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, 'Let us go and worship other gods' (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people. Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. (Deuteronomy 13:5-10)

It tells us to completely sever spiritual connections with them. If we do not sever them, one day they will succeed in enticing you away from your God, the Lord:

Suppose you hear in one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live in that some scoundrels have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, 'Let us go and worship other gods' (gods you have not known). Then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock. You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt. None of those condemned things are to be found in your possession, so that the Lord will turn from his fierce anger; he will show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your ancestors— because you obey the Lord your God by keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes. (Deuteronomy 13:12-18)

Without a Heart That Loves God, People Are Easily Led Astray

God is telling us to have a resolute attitude. There are many who claim to be prophets, claiming to have dreams, who want to entice people away from God. One thing can prove this: they do not have a heart that loves God. If we do not have a heart that loves God, we will quickly stray. I have been contemplating why people stray so quickly. The path of faith is wonderful; all our benefits are found in God alone. Why do we still seek outside of Him? When people encounter problems, encounter God's discipline, they do not know how to reflect on themselves properly. When faced with setbacks, they immediately start looking for other methods, instead of carefully examining themselves before God, seeking other methods that they think can be quickly effective.

If there are things in the world that you love but have not obtained, you desperately seek them from God. If you still cannot obtain them, you start to resent God. If there is an idol that you can worship that can give you what you want, would you worship it? I guess you probably would. If a person loves the world, the love of God is not in them. They love the world, love money. Idols can give you money, but they cannot give you life, joy, or peace. If a person loves something, they are about to be enticed because the devil knows what you love in your heart. When a person loves God, it is difficult for the devil to deceive you.

I met some pastors who said, Has God really called me to serve Him? It doesn't seem like it, because my service is so difficult, so tiring, so God has not called me. But today, God has called each of us to serve Him. Today, if you are unwilling to serve the Lord your God, you will surely serve the enemies whom the Lord sends against you. If you do not love God in your heart, you will surely be deceived by false prophets and false dreamers. If not these, then you will also be enticed away from God by close family members and friends, or by people who come from other cities. Because it is too easy for people to turn away from God; there are a thousand and one reasons for us to turn away from Him.

Love God, and Shepherd God's Flock

Examine yourselves carefully today, whether you love God. For those who love God, God always has one requirement: to shepherd God's flock. The most joyful thing in my life is serving God because I love God, so I am happy. From the time I started knowing God until today, I know that He is my life, and nothing can stop me from trusting Him for a lifetime. I encourage everyone to think carefully. Among us, you will see one thing: our leaders serve with all their heart and strength, day and night. Everyone is doing their best to serve. Why are they so happy to do such things? It seems foolish, because they love God.

If there is anything that can stop us from entering cults, heresies, and idolatry, it is only one thing: loving God. Loving God means shepherding God's flock, and shepherding the flock is the responsibility of every Christian. You may still be in pain, suffering from illnesses because of the path you have walked before. Start repenting today and say, God, I love you. I want to be raised up to shepherd God's flock. Then you must learn how to shepherd. If you value your work more than God, or value your studies more than God, you have been enticed and turned away from God.

Conclusion

If you convey a concept or idea that entices others away from God, that is accursed and destined for destruction in God's eyes. These enticements, regardless of the excuse—family, children, parents, work, life—are destined for destruction in God's eyes. Those who love God can surely become a blessing to this generation because we help many people solve their problems. Because we have this resolve, nothing and no one can turn us away from God. This is what I want to tell everyone today. If God gives us such a resolute attitude, we must stay away from those who entice us away from God. Face those who entice you with a resolute attitude. Although you don't have to kill them, you can maintain a distant relationship with them.

May God bless everyone!
