【Course】Unraveling the Myths - Lesson 05: Myths of Intercession

2019-02-04 12,166 001B Course - Unlocking Myths Course

Let us discuss the myth of intercession. Intercession is quite a confusing matter. Does the Bible contain the word intercession? Yes, the Bible does have this term, but intercession has been misused later on. The truth of intercession in the Bible is just Paul's polite remark in his letters, which is to pray so that we can preach the gospel clearly. This is the only situation where it appears in the Bible. However, many people excessively broaden the concept of intercession.

The most common thing I hear is: Can you intercede for my child? I would ask: What's wrong with the child? It turns out the child is sick and they want someone to intercede for the child. In fact, she goes around looking for people to intercede for her child. Is it effective? Basically, it’s ineffective.

We humans like to do these ineffective things. Today we do ineffective things, tomorrow we do ineffective things. The result of doing this is ineffectiveness. People always do ineffective things, and this is a very serious matter. Christian faith must return to the spirit and truth, to really clarify whether it is effective or ineffective. Always doing ineffective things is a great confusion.

Some people send messages everywhere, asking for intercession for so-and-so. You can't say it's completely ineffective, as there might be a tiny bit of effect later on, but basically the effect has nothing to do with the intercession. So many people have a misunderstanding that the more people pray for them, the better. This misunderstanding even reaches an absurd level, mobilizing tens of thousands of people to pray for a patient globally.

But when we return to the Bible, I have never seen Jesus say, You all pray for Me together. The intercession mentioned in the Bible is actually quite different from the intercession I see now.

For example, how many people did Jesus Christ need to intercede for Him? Actually, He really didn't need much. Why did the Apostle Paul have so many people intercede for him? So that they would remember Paul in their intercession, which is a manifestation of unity.

These people prayed for the work Paul was carrying out, constantly expanding the church, constantly building their own churches. When there were people behind him interceding for him, they had the same vision, the same mission, and the same Mingding Destiny. In other words, this is a state of unity, a manifestation of unity.

Prayer Needs the Spirit of God

Now, regarding our intercession today, for example, interceding for the sick, they believe that the more people who pray, the more powerful it is. But what does the Bible actually say? The Bible says to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and the power of Jesus Christ is limitless.

The Apostle Paul prayed in the Spirit, and then he had power. Because what was the effect of his praying in tongues? The effect was more filling of the Holy Spirit, and more filling of the Holy Spirit would bring more power. In other words, power is related to the filling of the Holy Spirit, because the Bible says:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Power is related to several things: Most importantly, it is related to the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we will receive power. So we need to understand this matter of intercession, it is a myth. I have never seen Jesus need a large group of people there to intercede.

Why is it that a certain evangelist is so powerful in his preaching? Is it because there are many people behind the scenes interceding for him? Such a thing actually has no clear precedent in the Bible. I have not found it. If you find it, you can tell me.

I have a basic principle, which is that if there is a precedent in the Bible, we will carefully study it. If there is no precedent in the Bible, at least it must be in line with the Bible. Therefore, whether it is the service of an evangelist or a patient who needs prayer, there is no need to use the concept of intercession extensively.

Prayer Needs Unity

Many churches have intercession teams. A long time ago, there was an intercession warrior who was the captain of the intercession team. His prayer for the pastor of their church was quite astonishing.

One day, he called me and asked if he could come to our church. He said he didn't want to go to their church. Every night he had severe stomach pain. I led him in prayer, and he had a great manifestation, with demons howling inside him. I talked with him and learned that he had great opinions and disagreements with his church.

He thought that everything he received was from God. He prayed to ask God to change his pastor. This is a big problem, this is a manifestation of manipulation. There is no such record in the Bible. How could this not attract demons?

We often have misunderstandings. Pastors fly frequently, and those who don't know think they are serving God and have no time to pray, so they find an intercession team. Is this feasible? The Apostle Paul was a man of prayer, and he prayed himself, he did not need intercession. What he needed was a team with one heart and one mind.

A sister, the pastor of her former church, needed the people below to pray for him. He said that he was at the forefront and most vulnerable to the attacks of the devil. I was thinking, is there such a record in the Bible? Do not use wrong theological concepts to create a lot of trouble.

Some people in the church release a lot of fear, saying that there are arrows shooting at them, and ask everyone to intercede for them. The confusion brought by intercession far outweighs its benefits, so we must explain the myth of intercession to everyone. Prayer cannot be replaced. Emulating Jesus is the key. When did Jesus ask people to pray for Him, while He Himself did not pray?

We must be a person of prayer, and we don't need any intercession captains. It's good for us to pray together. The word intercession has been misused. It is not that the more people who pray, the more powerful it is. Our power has little to do with how many people pray together, it has to do with unity.

For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” (Matthew 18:20)

Why doesn't the Bible say two or three ten thousands people? If the Bible says that twenty or thirty thousand people have to pray together, then if the prayer is not answered, people will easily attribute it to not having so many people involved. This explanation is troublesome. Prayer is better when it is more united, not when there are more people. Two or three people is very practical.

Based on the Bible

Once we understand the basic principles, we should return to the Bible when we encounter issues, to see if there is such a saying. If there isn't, we must be careful. To the brothers and sisters who come among us, whether they are new or have been here for some time, I encourage you to develop such a habit, to return to the Bible to see, and not just echo what others say.

I often receive this kind of message: Pray for me. I say: Come, I'll lead you in prayer together. The other person says: No need, just intercede for me. I find it very strange. When have you ever seen a mute, a deaf person, or a blind person at home, and then asked Jesus to intercede for him? It doesn't seem like there's such a thing; they all go to Jesus themselves.

Therefore, intercession sounds like a joke. You will find that I rarely say, Everyone pray for me. How good it is that I lead everyone to pray! Isn't it? So, brothers and sisters, begin to remove the wrong concepts in your faith. It's not that the more people who pray for you, the more powerful you are. This statement has no basis in the Bible.

Nor is it that if you are sick, the more people who pray for you, the higher the probability of your healing. It's not like that! This also has no basis in the Bible. What I see is that when Jesus touches someone, they are healed immediately. When Paul does something, they are healed. This is not a difficult thing.

Then do we need everyone to pray together? Yes, we do. Do we need everyone to have the same vision, the same Mingding Destiny, the same mission? We need it.

You will find that in the early days, we eliminated this bad habit. We don't have prayer request forms. The prayer request forms don't write about whose family has a baby, who is getting married, or which brother is sick and hospitalized, and then everyone prays for these people.

But what do we have? We pray together to build a glorious and victorious church. And what do we pray for? We pray for our families, to trample on the dark powers of our families, to pray for the release of the souls of our families who have been taken captive. These are the things we do.

What else do we do? We pray with building the Body of Jesus Christ and building the church as the core, absolutely not for our trivial matters. We got rid of this bad habit a long time ago. We remove the myth of intercession from the church. Why? For example, if someone has a strong reaction to pregnancy, asking her pastor to pray for her, the adverse reactions of pregnancy will really disappear.

Therefore, when someone asks you to intercede for them, don't bullshit with them. Why? Because it is not a biblical truth. What should we start learning? Learn to remove the myth of intercession and return to the true teaching of the Bible.

Then there are some people who want to find a prayer partner, and then the two of them intercede for each other. I don't think this is taught by the Bible either. But I think everyone can develop what habit? Find your pastor to lead you in prayer.

But don't find your pastor to do P2P investments together, and end up losing terribly. Finding your pastor is not for those things. If you do those things among us, and you lose, don't come to me. We don't need prayer partners; we need to be unified with the pastor. Everyone must know, don't mix these things together. He is my pastor, so I follow him to do P2P. Then this thing really becomes a shitty thing.

There are many places among us where we need to remove myths. Intercession is one, seeking prayer partners is another. Start looking for your pastor. Some people also do strange things through these positions. Our brothers and sisters must know that the word of God is the key! If you mess around without conforming to the word of God, even if it is your pastor, he will lead you into the ditch.

We must know that above the pastor is the district leader, isn't it? What's more, the district leader is your pastor, and above there are higher leaders. Don't be deceived by these messy things.

Our brothers and sisters should develop a habit of becoming more and more sensitive in the spirit. If one day I suddenly ask you to borrow money, then you have to be careful. Who knows whether it is a person or a ghost at that time? Brothers and sisters should begin to have a very sensitive spiritual insight into many things. Don't be spiritually blind and go around tossing when you suffer losses in the end.

Whether it is intercession or finding a partner to pray with, they are basically not the truth of the Bible. Unless we implement those more important truths, and then we go to implement those less important truths.

Intercession is not discussed in detail in the Bible, nor does it occupy a very important position. It's just that Paul's letters probably wrote a set of polite words. Brothers and sisters, from now on, learn to be a person of prayer. There is a lot of prayer in our church, so you have a lot of time to pray. Let's remove this myth of intercession.

May God bless everyone.

Can Samson be considered a church?

Reply: That's the Book of Judges. It can't be called a church. The church appeared after Jesus Christ. The era of the Judges was an era when everyone did what was right in their own eyes. We encourage everyone not to ask such questions. It's as if you want to be a member of Samson's church. Comment: Can Samson be considered a church?

Teacher, the title of 1 Timothy chapter 2 in the Bible is 'Instructions on Prayer for All.' Its content is: I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people... This is also a letter from Paul. Is it teaching us to intercede and pray for others?

You are right, that's how it should be! But you missed the latter part of that sentence: 'that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.' The purpose of intercession is not for them to receive salvation, but so that we may live godly lives.
