【Bible Study】Numbers Chapter 27 - The Character of Those Who Inherit the Inheritance

2018-08-25 29,523 Numbers Character Inheritance Righteousness Seeking Responsibility Passivity

Introduction

Today, I want to share a very important topic with everyone: The Character of Those Who Inherit the Inheritance, which is also discussed in Numbers chapter 27. Was Joshua inheriting an inheritance? Actually, he was also inheriting an inheritance, what was inherited was a responsibility. We must understand what kind of person God delights in. God delights in those who can take on the responsibility of managing the whole earth. So we must be clear in our hearts what kind of person God delights in. If we do not understand what kind of person God values, it will surely be a tragedy for us.

I have met many Christians from traditional churches who greatly respect God's authority, believing that this matter is God's sovereignty, and that matter is also God's sovereignty. Regarding what kind of person God wants, they believe that God wants those who respect God's sovereignty, so they stagnate, become lazy, and give up their thirst for and pursuit of God. Is this the result God wants to see? Are those who obey His sovereignty like this? Actually, no, it is that these people do not understand God and do not understand God's heart. If people respect God's sovereignty, they give up active faith, thinking: If God wants to bless me, then bless me! I wait for God, even if I am cursed, it doesn't matter, let it be! This is not respecting God's sovereignty at all! If we respect God's sovereignty, we must know what kind of person God delights in, but we do not see that God delights in those who respect His sovereignty. There is no such record in the Bible. God delights in people's obedience, but people do not know what kind of person God wants.

Many times we do not understand God's heart. For example, Jacob held on tightly to God's leg and said: If you do not bless me, I will not let you go. As a result, God gave him a name called Israel, meaning victorious in wrestling with God and with people, and then gave Jacob a blessing. If we do not know what kind of person God wants, it is a tragedy. He gives me blessings, I want them, if He doesn't give me blessings, then forget it. This is not understanding God's heart. God distributes the Holy Spirit to everyone, is it to wait for God? Today, this chapter is to completely break through our traditional concepts.

The daughters of Zelophehad were five outstanding warriors of their clan. Their names are engraved in the Bible: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. What kind of people were these five daughters? Did they know that God's rule for Israel was that men inherit the inheritance? They all knew. But what God wants is the courage and character to make exceptions. There was no precedent before that women could inherit the inheritance; it was impossible. What were these five women thinking at the time? They were thinking: We have to inherit the inheritance too! Do you say this violates God's sovereignty, or respects God's sovereignty? So we must read the Bible to understand God's heart. This chapter tells us: See the courage these five women possess, and imitate them! There was no precedent before, and God had already set the rules, but in the end, God established new rules. God never said that the inheritance should be divided among women, but for these five women, God actually made new rules. The Bible says this:

**The Lord said to Moses, 'What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and turn their father’s inheritance over to them. Say to the Israelites, “If a man dies and leaves no son, turn his inheritance over to his daughter. (Numbers 27:6-8)

God actually made new rules for these five women. Did this comply with God's sovereignty or not? I think God was very pleased with these five women and made new rules for them. From then on, if a man had no son, the daughter would inherit the father's inheritance, so that their father's name could be passed on.

These Five Women Have Dao in Their Hearts

When you do things, you must have Dao. If you only have the inheritance in your eyes, but you do not have the mentality of paying the price in your heart, you will not be able to obtain the promise. This is not called Dao. For example, when you go to the company, you say: Boss, you have to give me a raise. The boss says, Why should I give you a raise? Because I bought a house and recently bought a car, I need money. But who doesn't need money? If you don't have Dao, will people give you a raise? So brothers and sisters, have Dao. Look at how well these five daughters spoke. Why should their father's name be removed from the clan because he has no sons? Their words are reasonable.

Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin. Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.” (Numbers 27:3-4)

Today we need to know that there must be reason in what we say. Their father was not with Korah's party. My father did not die because of Korah's party. God didn't like Korah's name, but God is very clear that my father died in the wilderness, but God doesn't like to erase his name and remove his name from the clan. Look at how well this is said, Give us property among our father's relatives.

So brothers and sisters, ask a few more whys, it doesn't matter to ask. If these five daughters of Zelophehad stayed at home and did nothing, they would get nothing, because there were already regulations. Moses and Joshua would divide the inheritance according to what God had already stipulated. But these five women did not become rigid. They said, What kind of regulations are these? Let's go to Moses and ask him why this is the case? But Moses could not answer. Actually, I really like people asking me, asking me until I can't answer, and then I present the question to the Lord.

We must have Dao in our work. If you don't have Dao, how can you go? Whether you are being a good person or doing things, you must have Dao. Without Dao, people will make shrewd things chaotic. Many people are only pursuing their own selfish desires, but these five daughters have Dao. With Dao in their hearts, they can ask for a reason, and they stumped Moses. Fortunately, Moses did not get angry after being stumped. Actually, Moses knew very well what kind of person our God wanted, a smart person who understood God's heart.

I have been pondering something recently. What is it? It is that many people often have inspirations. Perhaps this inspiration is, I want to go there for a few days; that inspiration is, I want to go back from there. Then they are willing to do this thing when they have an inspiration, and when they have another inspiration, they will do another thing, relying on inspiration all their lives. I am very curious, is this really revering God? Sometimes when I ask them some things in the Bible, they know nothing. This is because there is no Dao in their hearts!

I encountered a ridiculous thing before. There was a sister who loved the Lord very much, but she was ignorant in spirit. Actually, I don't think she loved the Lord that much, because if a person loves the Lord, he will surely keep and obey God's words. She wanted to invest in a project. She told me, The reason I want to make money is to make the preachers rich. Then she invested millions in a business. When it was time to get the returns, she found that she had suffered losses, and the result was that she lost everything. As a result, she called and asked me, You have to pray for my money. I said, Why pray for your money? There is no such teaching in the Bible! Then she replied, because every night the Holy Spirit was moving her, urging her to pray for money. After thinking about it carefully, I found the problem - would the Holy Spirit really do these things? I don't think the Holy Spirit would do such a boring prank.

Later, I continued to listen to her talk: You see, I am so sleepy at night, but the Holy Spirit wakes me up and makes me pray for money, but the more I pray, the worse the situation becomes. After listening, I couldn't help but exclaim, is this the Holy Spirit? She thought it was the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit would never do such a boring thing. I questioned her, then how do you know it is the Holy Spirit? She was stunned and had never thought about it.

Look how bad this evil spirit is, she never doubted it. Everyone must know that our God is not afraid of people having questions, but we must be careful not to ask questions that discern good and evil, and do not ask boring questions, but ask more questions about taking responsibility. We must clearly know what God wants. What our God delights in is: people who are thirsty. Let's review and think carefully, after these five daughters divided the inheritance, was their father's name not removed from the clan? Or was it removed? After many years, no one remembers. Only a Zelophehad is recorded in the Bible, but these five daughters knew very well what kind of person God wanted.

A Thirsting and Seeking Character

Do you know which are my favourite scriptures? They are the stories Jesus taught, like this one: A man receives a friend, but has nothing in his house. So, he goes to his neighbour to ask for bread. The neighbour says, We are all asleep; it can't be done. I cannot give you bread. But what did Jesus say?

I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because of his friendship, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. (Luke 11:13)

In God's presence, one must possess a character of pursuit. Look, seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door will be opened. How do you knock? How do you find? Without being filled with the Holy Spirit, one presumes that is God's will. You see, I have asked, and asked, and it has not been granted; therefore, it is not God's will. This is failing to recognise God. We must know our God from within. What kind of person does our God favour? He favours those like Jacob, Abraham, Isaac, and Joseph, those like the five daughters of Zelophehad—those who hold onto God tightly, not letting go until He gives. Therefore, brothers and sisters, today we must cultivate the character of those who inherit the estate. Our God favours such character.

Some are curious and ask me, Has God really chosen you? I'm not sure if God has specifically chosen me, but I am certain that I choose to believe I have been chosen. On what basis do you think you are chosen to serve God? I choose to believe that I am chosen to serve God; I simply choose to believe! I added: Even if God has not chosen me, I will hold onto Him tightly until He does.

Know that our God is particularly concerned with character and integrity. Today we must understand that God is certainly seeking such individuals. Now that we understand God's will, how should we implement it? In all that we do, let us acknowledge Him, not giving up until we obtain. Like the one seeking bread, if he does not receive it the first time, he asks again, continuously knocking. Even worldly people give you food because of your persistence. Will God not give the Holy Spirit to those who earnestly seek Him? This is thirsting and seeking! Therefore, we must have a recognition of God. God wants to bring all treasures into His Kingdom, and those who thirst and seek are like fine gold in God's eyes.

Jacob pursued God for 75 years. God did not speak a word to him. He had no spiritual feelings, nor did miraculous signs appear. What sustained him and made him even more prosperous was only one conviction—he would not give up until he received the covenant that his grandfather Abraham and father Isaac had made with God. I will use every means possible! Even if it means deceiving my father for his blessing, I will not hesitate! This is the boldness and character in Jacob's nature.

Jacob understood God's way in his heart. Why pursue God? Why seek the inheritance of his father? Why do this? He could explain it clearly. We must be clear in our hearts that God wants such people. In this generation, many are appointed by God. We know what kind of people God is seeking, whom He favours, what kind of people will inherit the estate, and who can bear responsibility. This is to be fully acquainted with God in understanding.

Joshua Also

Not only the daughters of Zelophehad, but also Joshua, who resolutely took over Moses' responsibility. Today I want to raise a question: Did God not pass on the Mingding Destiny to Abraham, Isaac, and Joseph? Why is it that in Moses' generation, his son was unheard of? Why is this? Because Moses' son did not have this character. We, who believe in Jesus, become descendants of Abraham. Why do we become descendants of Abraham? Because we must have the nature and character of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; this is what God wants. Joshua is the same. Joshua followed Moses in battle, a young man of great pursuit. The Bible describes him this way:

So the Lord said to Moses, 'Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him. Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.' (Numbers 27:18-20)

God wanted to pass Moses' responsibility to Joshua. Joshua's life is very interesting; his story is recorded from Exodus. In the Bible, we see him closely following Moses. I have not read that Moses specifically chose him as his assistant, so I guess that Joshua asked Moses, insisting on being his assistant. One point we make very clear: God favours those who are proactive, not those who are passive.

This is the same as the character of the five daughters of Zelophehad. No one knew whether God had chosen Joshua to be Moses' assistant, not even Joshua himself, but Joshua thirsted for God and proactively worked as Moses' assistant, following him all the way. Such a person is one who has the Holy Spirit in his heart, one who seeks God.

God will never favour puppets who respect His sovereignty, nor does He favour those who are passive. Without Jacob's character of clinging to God's blessing, God will not favour. God will never give responsibility to someone who is lukewarm, who is perfunctory when asked to do things. God detests such people. Did God send the daughters of Zelophehad? No! They themselves wanted to reclaim their territory and enter the Promised Land, so they came to fight. Did God tell Joshua to follow Moses? He himself longed to follow Moses. Did Moses choose him as his assistant? He insisted on being his assistant. Moses must have thought: This young man looks good; let him be my guard! Following a leader and being clear about one's responsibilities is a manifestation of knowing how to be a subordinate, and only by being a good subordinate can one have the opportunity to be a leader.

We must all understand one thing: if you cannot be a subordinate, then you can never take on the responsibility of a superior, nor can you be a manager. You can only be your own boss, and be a subordinate to others for the rest of your life. Of course, every superior starts as a subordinate, so those who know how to be subordinates will certainly be able to take on management responsibilities in the future, while the unruly will be managed by others for a lifetime. Joshua followed Moses, learning to take on the responsibilities of a manager. He often led troops into battle, displaying extreme bravery. When Joshua fought the Amorites in the valley, Moses raised his hands on the mountain, causing the Spirit of God to descend on the Israelite warriors, making them invincible, greatly defeating the enemies. This was how they divided the work.

So, do not think that following Moses gives you the opportunity to muddle through; you must really have something to offer. Where did Joshua learn his skills? It was through practice. Brothers and sisters, we must also practice more in our daily lives. At crucial moments, this experience will enable you to seize opportunities. The five daughters of Zelophehad and Joshua inherited the responsibility of learning to manage their property and govern the congregation of Israel. A person who is unwilling to take responsibility cannot be said to have any prospects.

If a person receives a heavy task from the boss in the workplace, it is to take on more responsibility. And all this, of course, is because you are efficient in your work, so you are given more responsibility. If you do not get a raise, what would you think? You would complain: What is this? Giving me so much work without a raise. Do not worry; responsibility comes first, and salary increases later. There is no such thing as a salary increase before more responsibility.

Brothers and sisters, be clear in your hearts that when you see your boss giving you more responsibility, you should know that the date of your salary increase is not far away. Don't be negative at this time. Whether God is seeking or the world's bosses are seeking, they are choosing those who are willing to take responsibility. Of course, foolish bosses are an exception. They dismiss those who are efficient and can do things, but leave those who have no business ability.

If we are subordinates, who should we follow? Follow those like Moses and Abraham. People must not be confused. We often mention the story of Abraham and Lot. Lot followed Abraham and became rich, but later became self-righteous and left Abraham. Although he made another fortune, it was not long-lasting. One day, fire suddenly came down from the sky. Lot, with his two daughters, was penniless, and his wife turned into a pillar of salt.

Brothers and sisters, be a wise person, emulate the daughters of Zelophehad and Joshua. Only such people can inherit the estate. Do not emulate those who died in the wilderness, do not emulate Korah and his party. Know that we ourselves must have the appearance of a subordinate when we are subordinates, and the appearance of a superior when we are superiors. Know what kind of people God favours, know that we ourselves are not seeking anything else, but seeking a responsibility, which is to take on the Mingding Destiny that God has for us in this generation, and then we will surely receive the estate, we will surely enter the Promised Land.

Amen! May God bless everyone!
