【Faith Discipleship】-【Words of the Preacher Series】01: Vanity of vanities, all is vanity

2024-10-13 1,742 Words of the Preacher Series

Q1: Teacher, I do not have discernment of good and evil with my parents, nor do I harbour hatred towards them in my heart. I always feel I have let my parents down and owe them, but when I get anxious, I cannot control myself and end up speaking loudly to them, even shouting. Sometimes I say impulsive things. Will this bring a curse upon me?

Yes, it will bring a curse. Why? It is not just our casual thoughts; it is that our core interests conflict with the word of God. Repent now. Remember, God does not disregard repentance. The moment a person repents, the blood of Jesus covers their transgressions, and the curse is nullified. We must understand that we are not entitled to speak loudly to our parents, especially when our core interests are involved. In front of our parents, our core interests cease to be interests at all.

Therefore, I want to readjust quickly. If we live to our 30s, 40s, or 50s and find that we have achieved nothing, that everything we do is futile, and good opportunities are squandered, we must reflect. Many curses occur in the realm of honouring parents.

Q2: Teacher, I still do not understand. If one has seen through everything, why is it still necessary to work hard? I have seen through everything, and I reverence God. I am joyful even without working. Why should I force myself to work more? What is the relationship between seeing through everything and working?

I did not expect such a question. Let me explain. If a person is joyful without working, I ask you, is that in accordance with God's will? A lazy person may be joyful in their idleness, but laziness is evil in God's eyes. One may be joyful not working, but that joy will not last. Know that lazy people are prone to illness. Sooner or later, they will fall sick.

Why force oneself to work more? Because a person is lazy, they feel forced to work more. Those who are willing to work do so willingly. Lazy people must know that God does not delight in those who are both lazy and wicked. God will inflict upon the lazy person many of the consequences that they deserve. You may be fine when you are young, but when these things come, it will be troublesome.

Why work? Remember, when people work, what are they doing? They are solving problems. When people work, what are they doing? They are creating value. If everything is vanity, why do these things? Because God created man to manage the earth, not to indulge in eating, drinking, and amusement.

Therefore, we, brothers and sisters, must readjust. I am joyful even without working, but that is not the word of God. You say, I have seen through everything and I reverence God. To reverence God is to know what His word says, that He has arranged for us to manage the earth.

If you do not love to work, what do you manage? Either you learn to do things, learn to be a person. Those who can do things can be persons. Then, you learn to manage people, learn to manage affairs. If you want to be a blessing to others, how can you bless anyone, being joyful without working? Your words seem illogical.

Q3: Teacher, did Solomon commit his sins before or after writing Ecclesiastes? Why did such a wise man commit such elementary mistakes?

Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes in his later years. It is important to realize that it is after experiencing so much that one understands the words of the Preacher. In fact, God was conducting an experiment through Solomon.

Q4: Teacher, I am not yet able to be filial; I am still living off my parents. What can I do to be considered filial and avoid curses?

Do not think of your parents giving you money as a problem. Filial piety is an attitude. It is not necessarily about giving money or not. It is about honouring parents and having the wisdom to do so. When our core interests are affected, our reaction should be whether we consider ourselves or adhere to the word of God.

Q5: Teacher, my mother-in-law has her own house and is in good health, not needing care, but she likes to come to my house to eat, drink, and stay. She disapproves of my prayers and secretly tells my children that I am mentally ill. I want to live separately from her. Despite my efforts to reason with her, I could not stop her until I lost my temper and separated. I know my faults, such as being easily critical. I want to be filial to them, but I do not want to live together. Is this considered unfilial?

I think everyone should understand this issue. Why does your mother-in-law do this? The relationship between a daughter-in-law and a mother-in-law is very difficult to manage. If a daughter-in-law lacks wisdom or a genuine willingness to pay the price, she cannot truly be filial.

Let me ask you: If you were truly filial and your mother-in-law admired you, would she say such things? She would not. The problem is the poor relationship between you and your mother-in-law, and the fact that you already had this intention in mind. Is there a problem with her wanting to live with her son? No. But because of you, her son is in a difficult position. On one side is you, on the other is his mother. You had to quarrel before she backed down.

Is there a better way to resolve this issue? Yes, there is. It depends on our approach to dealing with people. Many things could have been handled well, but they were not. You are pointing out all the problems with your mother-in-law, but we should be addressing our own problems.

Q6: Teacher, I completely agree that life is vanity of vanities. At the same time, one cannot give up, be passive, or be disillusioned with life. One must rely on God, actively strive to solve problems in work and life, manage what can be managed, and find joy in labour. One should not grieve over failures but should reverence God. Is this thinking correct?

This thinking is very good.

Q7: Teacher, I remember you once said that indulging parents allows the evil spirits within them to torment their children. If one lacks spiritual insight, how should one discern what is happening and honour parents in a way that is good in God's eyes?

This is quite interesting. Many people honour their parents, only to end up honouring an evil spirit residing in their parents. Why? Because they lack spiritual discernment. The evil spirit is manipulating your parents, and you are following along, thinking it is filial piety. This issue itself is a matter of spiritual height.

Let me tell you, if you are good to your child and love your child, should you discipline them? You should discipline them. If you do not discipline them, is that love? You indulge them, spoil them, and eventually, they end up in jail. Will they not blame you? It is the same in dealing with parents.

We should know what is of the devil and what is of man. For example, when an elderly person develops dementia, do you know what they will do? People torment their children. I ask you, is that your dad or your mom? Many people are tormented, worn out, and exhausted. In fact, they are being tormented by a host of demons. You may not understand what I am saying, but we will ponder it slowly.

Q8: Teacher, I am easily influenced by others. Even if I have no discernment of good and evil regarding a person, once someone says something, I develop some discernment of good and evil. Teacher, how should I train myself to get rid of this bad habit?

This problem is truly foolish. Without God's wisdom, one becomes foolish. Study the word of God more. If something is said to be corrupting, do not engage in it. Why would anyone corrupt themselves? It is because people do not like to read the word of God, living in ignorance. They must have a little of what corrupts them, but they do not want what blesses them. People get together and corrupt each other, and they must have a piece of that. It is a foolish thing. How do you change? Read the word of God and reverence God properly.

Q9: Teacher, a Christian was conflicted and fearful about studying Cloud Water Zen Mind in the learning process. I understand it this way, and I am not sure if it is correct: In the gentle morning light, a song of Cloud Water Zen Mind flows warmly through the heart like a clear stream.

These words are well used. That tranquility and harmony make people immerse themselves involuntarily. As Christians, are we not pursuing such a peaceful heart so that we can better listen to God's voice and understand His will? The Bible says, Be still, and know that I am God. In this noisy world, finding that inner peace is particularly important for every believer.

This is similar to the pursuit of inner peace and tranquility in Christianity. Listening quietly to hymns, reading the Bible, and listening to sermons allow us to quietly feel God's will and truth, enhancing our cognition and understanding, which is better. When people here the word zen, they seem to think of Buddhism.

I discovered that many Buddhists are more Buddhist, but Christians are less Jesus-like. In fact, Jesus sees deeper and more thoroughly than Buddha. If you read Ecclesiastes, you will find it very Buddhist. Christians use Buddhist to describe a state, but Christians should see more clearly than Buddhists.

However, real life and church teachings are insufficient, so Christians are deeply controlled. In my life and church life, I see Christians becoming more selfish, while Buddhists become more willing to give. This is a common phenomenon. Perhaps you, as a pastor or a Christian, do not agree with what I am saying.

You can investigate. This is the result of my investigation. Maybe my investigation is wrong, but I still have to say that this is the result of my investigation. Christians are truly selfish. Why? They do not see through. Therefore, few can understand Ecclesiastes.

Why did God say to Abraham, You will be a blessing to all nations on earth, not Receive blessings from all nations on earth. Today’s Christians are quite detestable, saying, “Pastor, quickly pray for and bless me.” Do you understand that?

If a pastor says after finishing a sermon, “Everyone who wants a blessing, come forward and I will pray for you,” a large group of people will go up. When I look at them, I see a bunch of selfish people. The Bible tells us to be a blessing to others, to give to others. But most of the Christians we see are wanting to get. Is that God's will? That is not God's will.

So, what inner peace? In fact, many Christians are struggling, completely unable to see through. To some extent, I think it is easier to interact with Buddhists than with Christians. If you ask me if I would hire Christians as employees, I would not. But if you are a preacher and do not hire Christians, hiring Buddhists to preach Buddhism would be a problem.

So, one must start training from scratch, and the training is tiring. Therefore, the laziness and selfishness of Christians are completely contrary to the Bible. It is normal for many Christians to have serious illnesses in the church because what they do is not in accordance with God's will, and God knows it.

Q10: Teacher, I cannot consistently live my life with focus, doing my own things. I deviate along the way, comparing myself, fearing shame, and losing joy. Everything is like this.

It is easy to fall into this trap when believing in the Lord. This is the Christian. Why do they end up living under a curse? The reason is simple: they do not realize that life is vanity of vanities. I often say this, so do not blame me if you are tired of hearing it. If you were to die tomorrow, would you still care about these things today? If you do, I have nothing to say.

If we were to die tomorrow, we would let go of many things today. Of course, many people cannot let go even when they are dying. They are not greedy enough and arrange for their sons to continue being greedy. Once we see through the things we are living for, and look at this life from an eternal perspective, we will find ourselves very foolish. Why should we do foolish things?

We must often raise ourselves from our level to the height of the Preacher, which is actually the height of a Christian. When we see through, many things change. People are joyful and blessed. When people are blessed, they do not have to work so hard. Then, you will find that you do not compare yourself, compete, or fear losing face. You are joyful, and as a result, you do things even better.

Q11: Teacher, I often feel that life is meaningless and that doing anything is pointless, but I am useless. What is this a symptom of?

Your meaninglessness is not true meaninglessness. It is because the things you want in life cannot be obtained, and the things you do not want, such as debt and illness, come in abundance. Why is this happening? Because people think that life is very meaningful, pursue these things, and then come to find disease and debt. They also become meaningless.

Your meaninglessness is because we felt that we wanted these things in the past, but all that came were heavy toil and hardship. Our meaninglessness is not true meaninglessness.

If we make a change today, what should we change? Change living for the pursuit of vanity. You can go back and listen to what I am preaching again. If people feel that life is vanity of vanities, would you have walked the path of Cain? Having walked the path of Cain and ended up there, you then find it meaningless.

Now, return to the starting point of Abraham , destroy what is within us, and rebuild. Build the faith of Abraham. I told you to do as Abraham did, believe as Abraham believed, and think as Abraham thought. That is the point.

Q12: Teacher, I want to deal well with the flesh. How do I deal with it?

A lot of praying in tongues, a lot of reading of the word of God. Simple, right?

Q13: Teacher, is it true that Christians have a kind of inexplicable superiority and are less humble than Buddhists?

Christians are a strange existence. Christians always want to change the world, but they do not change themselves. Buddhists always want to cultivate themselves, and they do not even think about changing the world. So it is turned upside down. Look at the Christians, they have great energy.

So I am wondering, actually, Christians should focus on changing themselves. If you read the Bible, you will discover that Christians should change themselves first. What is the significance of a carnal Christian in the end? It have no significance. So Christians cannot many things.

Q14: Teacher, God has blessed me, and now I want to buy a house. Is this considered loving the world?

No. Buy a house and have a place to live. Do you want to live in the streets? God has blessed you, so manage the money He has given you well. We need to break free from this delusion and know that many things are not important. Do not let them control us or rob us of our joy. Start living according to God's word.

Our Q&A ends here. May God bless everyone!
