Introduction
I have found myself to be a diligent pastor with high output and quality. But one thing is clear, we should try to understand this matter thoroughly, and then it will become clear. When you understand, you will not be afraid. Why are we afraid today? It is because of fear of the unknown. We are not afraid of things that are clear, such as brushing your teeth and washing your face after getting up, because you are very clear about them. But if you are not clear, you will be very afraid. Fear is closely related to intellectual understanding.
But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. (1 Corinthians 14:19)
If I were to lead you in praying in tongues all the time, no one would understand. Therefore, we must have breakthroughs in our understanding. The church is a place of learning, and it must solve many difficult learning problems. The church must teach everyone how to learn. Therefore, education is very important; ignorance is not an option for solving problems.
For example, a sister said, I had a feeling and spent several million to buy barren land, and I don't know what to do with it. She said it was the Holy Spirit's prompting, but I think it was an evil spirit's prompting.
People cannot operate in ignorance. Some things are the prompting of the Holy Spirit, but we must never be ignorant. Some people will say, Would my business be successful? I felt very peaceful at the time, so I did it, but I lost money. Who do you blame then? But knowing God intellectually should not be wrong. Fortunately, we can understand the 《Bible》 that we read.
Myth 1: Learning Is Just Attending Class
Today, I am talking about removing the myths in learning. Many children do not learn well not because they are not smart, but because they are caught in the myths of learning. What are these myths? I think learning is just attending class. I will tell you about an experiment I did. If I attended class and then took the exam, the probability of failing was very high; if I didn't attend class and took the exam, the probability of passing was very high. If I attended class and also studied on my own, the probability of getting high marks was very high.
I am puzzled by some parents who send their children to school for the whole day, but they don't understand anything. As a result, a day passes, two days pass, and time is wasted in class. I find this very strange. Many parents are ignorant and don't know that learning on their own is the key; what you hear is not your own. Try it and see. I will forget my sermon just now after taking a bath or waking up from a nap at night.
Listening is not enough, you have to learn it; learning is learning, and learning is not just attending class. Attending class is a lower level of learning. If your child's teacher complains that your child is not paying attention in class, you can discuss it with the teacher and say, My child studies too late and dozes off in class. Please be lenient. I used to doze off in class, but I studied on my own at night, and my grades were good.
Learning must cultivate the ability to learn on your own. It is not just about attending class. Learning is not just attending class; it is about learning on your own. Find a book and read it hard. If you don't understand it after reading it once, read it twice. Read a book a hundred times, and its meaning will become clear. This is the first myth: thinking that learning is just attending class. Attending class is a lower level of learning.
Myth 2: Feeling Like You Don't Understand Anything If You Don't Understand One Thing
The second myth is feeling like you don't understand anything if you don't understand one thing. I tutored a child, and I said, Take out your homework. His homework was about the four forces acting on a kite, and the teacher had graded it. As a result, he still gave the same answer on the exam and did not get any points, which made the teacher very angry. When the child was reading it, he thought he didn't understand the whole passage because there were words he didn't recognize, thinking that if he didn't understand one thing, he didn't understand the whole passage. Later, I read it with him, and it turned out that not understanding one or two words did not affect the overall understanding.
Many people say that the teachers at school are very good, but after looking at them, I don't think they understand it either. The kite has four forces. Couldn't the teacher just draw a diagram and explain it? Instead, they confused the child. In the end, in the process of learning, don't rely on the teacher to explain. Don't be superstitious about teachers. What is the level of these teachers? It is really questionable. What kind of people become elementary school teachers? Very capable people wouldn't do it. Kindergarten is even worse; it's just a bunch of nannies taking care of the children. I know some people may not like what I'm saying. How much money can you make in kindergarten? Those with money go to Alibaba or Google.
The industry that attracts talent is the industry that prospers. Education only attracts average talent. Now, most of the teachers are those who didn't do well on exams. There are some good ones, but I can't generalize. Don't rely on that; rely on yourself to understand things. In the process of learning, it doesn't matter if you don't understand one thing. For example, the shape of the power, a very deep term, is an aerodynamic term. How can elementary school students understand it? But it doesn't matter; it's just through this that lift is generated. It doesn't matter if we don't understand one thing when we read.
Some people read a novel overnight. Do they understand every word? And what about memory? Who can remember everything? If you read every word, you will find it's not good. If you skim through it, you will remember it more deeply. There is a myth that many people think that reading slowly means absorbing more. For example, if a person reads a book word by word, they won't be able to read anything. If I ask you what you read, you won't be able to answer. Reading quickly means skimming through it, grasping the subheadings, and knowing what the subheadings are about. When reading, look at the key points and remember those few sentences.
Sometimes, I like to show off what I've read. I haven't understood 《The Art of War》 thoroughly, but I remember the first few sentences. Actually, it's just those few sentences; I don't know much about the rest. I suddenly read a verse with the word 势 (momentum), and I remembered a few sentences before and after it. It's kind of a bluff, but not really. Just remember a little bit. Don't think that you understand everything if you understand it all; just understand a little bit. When you read it again, you can understand a little more.
Don't think that understanding a little bit doesn't count as understanding. Some people understand 95% but say there is still 5% they don't understand. You can occasionally show it off. For example,《The Book of Lord Shang》, I can't remember all of it; I just remember two sentences. Some people only dare to show off after they have fully understood it. See what 《The Book of Lord Shang》 says: Poor places have many strange things, and strange doctrines like to argue. Learn a little and use a little. I don't fully understand the 《Bible》 either, but I am bold and understand a little bit at a time. I don't think I explained today's sermon about fear well. I have been working on renovations for the past week. Understanding doesn't necessarily mean understanding everything; just understand a little bit. There is also this concept of pursuing perfection, which is a big myth.
Myth 3: Fear in Learning
Another myth is fear. I said at the beginning, I can't do it. When I read, everything hurts except my hair. People feel uncomfortable when they learn because they say they can't possibly understand. Fear is closely related to the myths I mentioned earlier. Don't think that fear can bring any benefits. I don't believe I can't read it. Even if I can only understand the first paragraph, that's good enough. For example, the first paragraph of the《Bible》: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Instead of saying, Can we understand the 《Bible》? We can't understand it, that's fear.
Myth 4: Unwilling to Ask Questions
There are also some people who are unwilling to ask questions. They don't like to ask themselves, and they don't like to ask others. This is a fatal habit. They think it's embarrassing to ask questions. It's embarrassing not to understand. It's also embarrassing to ask even if you understand. But it doesn't matter at all. Being unwilling to ask questions is a matter of saving face. I asked an employee to take meeting minutes. I arranged it the day before and said, Can you do it? Tell me how to do it. He said he needed to write the theme. Meeting minutes are not sermons; they are not argumentative essays. Meetings are about making decisions: what to do, how to do it, who will do it, and when to do it? Record these things.
A person must learn to lead a meeting. Why didn't you ask me? He thought he knew, but he didn't. You can say, This is my first time doing this. Boss, I'm not sure if I can take the meeting minutes correctly. Can you tell me how to do it? This is a healthier approach. Being unwilling to ask questions is a bad habit. When I get a book, what is this book about? I will ask myself questions first. As expected, I am very good at predicting things. Learn to ask yourself: What am I reading? What is this paragraph about? Sometimes ask others: What is this? Being unwilling to ask questions is a myth.
Feeling like you didn't do well on the exam means you didn't understand it. Exams are about skills. I can get high marks because I have mastered exam skills. You must know that exams have skills. The Chinese have studied exam skills very thoroughly. Even foreigners come to China to learn how to take the IELTS exam. You can only get good grades if you master exam skills and exam content. If you understand the content but don't have exam skills, you won't get good grades.
For example, if a question is worth 6 points, guess three points, each point worth 2 points. Some people don't have good exam skills and only answer one point, answering it repeatedly. People who do well on exams also do well in the workplace. Getting into college is not that important. Don't take it too seriously. What happens after you get in? If we put all the entrepreneurs together, there are many who didn't do well on exams. Including Jack Ma, his exam skills were not good, but he is amazing. Don't confuse exams with learning. You can also learn exam skills, and then you will be amazing. Don't be superstitious about exams.
Sometimes I have done a survey. I took out the college exam questions and tested those who had good grades in college, and they had all forgotten it. Do you think they learned it or not? This is debatable. I think they didn't learn it. Once I discovered that I hadn't ridden a bicycle in more than ten years, but I could still do it. But another person got on and couldn't ride. I said, Don't fool people. You couldn't do it ten years ago either. If you can't do it ten years ago, you still can't do it ten years later. Swimming is the same. If you haven't learned it, you will forget it.
Conclusion
We must pursue the essence of things, which is to learn things, grasp the essence of things, and be able to remember them even after ten years. Don't be superstitious about exams. After you get rid of these myths, you will be motivated to learn. Why? Because academic masters are like this. That's how they do it. Later, you will be amazing in the workplace. You are a person who grasps the essence. Grasp the myths of learning, remove them from a young age, and you will be amazing when you grow up. What I am saying is very practical. Implement it in your life. May God bless you!
Greetings.
